If you're a young woman, or really this holds true for anyone, and a man begins proselytizing about Plato and Hegel, I suggest you GTFO of the situation and trust your own knowledge. Also relevant in situations when one is compared to a painting or other such work of art/object.

Joseph who commented on skipping the first ten minutes of the film should have looked carefully to the reflection in the mirror and through the windows of that scene. Think of those whose aspirations never are reached. I'm sure Joseph has succeed in life without any downfalls.

I loved this.
It does need to be experienced.
It does force you to take it on its own terms.
And even though Barry Jenkins acknowledges Won Kar Wai as a primary influence, there seems to be some Godard in Jenkins as well.
I was devastated.

Most of the influences Jenkins seems to have mentioned would probably acknowledge Godard in any case (Kar-Wai especially, though comparing the two gives one a lot more credit than deserved...).

If I had tried to watch this movie in my 20s I would have tried to "understand" it.

The individual scenes put together tell the sad story of a young lost girl and her desperate fall into the world of prostitution. She was very introspective and non-trivial, which made the ending so much more poignant. Being in B&W added to the film the same way B&W photography adds ...Read more

Skipped the back to the camera acting for the first ten minutes or so. an insult to the viewer. Should have skipped the rest too.

I watched it a few times to get as much out of it as I could. Considering the time of its release, it's a revolutionary movie. It's not so much about the storyline as it is about the attitude in making the film. Excellent.

I had to watch the film a few times to understand the subtleties. It's worth it.

This is my favorite movie of all time, I first saw it at 21 years old. Only a year or two before I left a lackluster, flat & cultureless part of the U.S.A to escape the entrapment of a predatorial marriage I was manipulated into, sadly leaving my own two children to pursue a life outside ...Read more
